Student inspecting experiment resultsOur BSc Chemistry with a Year in Industry course has a long established record of providing our graduates with a high calibre qualification leading to employment in a wide range of professional occupations or to further study for research degrees. As the first two years are common to both the BSc and MChem programmes you can transfer to a four year course at any time before the third year, providing you achieve high enough grades in the second year.

The course content has been recently revised and updated to reflect both the latest developments in modern chemical science and new applications and techniques in industry and research. In the latest review our teaching quality was rated excellent in many categories and our teaching laboratories have recently been refurbished to a high standard to accommodate practical classes, project work and the department's prolific and diverse research activities.

Dry iceDuring your first two years you will extend your knowledge with compulsory core modules in areas such as organic stereochemistry and reactivity, and spectroscopy and structure. In physical Chemistry we look at what makes reactions go, kinetics and energetics, molecular organisation and architecture and the quantum world. During your second year you can choose optional modules in Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry or Forensic Analysis, and you will also apply to chemical or pharmaceutical companies for a one year industrial placement for Year 3. Unlike the MChem Chemistry with a Year in Industry course, students on the BSc course do not have to complete any distance-learning material. The work placement is highly recommended as a valuable experience to add to your CV and students tend to have an extra maturity when they return to Reading for their final year.

Much of your final year is spent working on a research or project in an area of your choice building on the skills and knowledge you have acquired at Reading. We also offer a third year project in Chemistry education and have established good links with local secondary schools who offer placements. This project is an excellent introduction to teaching and especially suitable for students considering going on to a PGCE.

A BSc honours degree in Chemistry from Reading is recognised as an excellent qualification for a career in industry, computing, teaching, research, public service, finance and business.
