Facilities and special analytical services
The Department of Chemistry has extensive research and analytical facilities and is pleased to offer, on a commercial basis, the specialist instrumental and other services outlined briefly below. The cost of access depends on the particular procedure and on the number of samples.
The Chemical Analysis Facility
The Chemical Analysis Facility is a state-of-the-art instrument suite that underpins the chemical aspects of world-class research at the University of Reading across a number of Biological and Physical Science areas, Archaeology, Soil Science and Engineering. Medically related topics form a significant portion of the work embracing fields such as pharmaceutics, drug synthesis and nutrition.
There are five groups of instruments:
- NMR Spectroscopy
- Mass Spectrometry
- X-Ray Diffraction and Scattering
- Optical Spectroscopy
- Thermal Analysis
The work of the Facility embraces both fundamental and applied research.
Glassblowing
The School has a well-equipped glassblowing shop with highly skilled staff able to work with a wide range of materials including silica, pyrex and speciality glasses.
