Bioanalysis and Analytical Methods (BAM)
The Research Team Bioanalysis and Analytical Methods (BAM) undertakes research in (Bio)Analytical Chemistry and interacts with research-active groups that are dependent on high-quality and cutting-edge analysis. In addition to all biomedical and health-related research areas where modern Analytical Methods are indispensible, BAM supports research in the environmental sciences and in areas as far reaching as archaeology. Major biomedical research areas include clinical diagnostics and drug discovery and topical research areas such as proteomics, metabolomics and systems biology/medicine.
BAM has the analytical expertise for advanced research that requires in-depth knowledge in analytical techniques, going beyond the classical chemical analyses. It also offers excellent hands-on training opportunities for obtaining basic and advanced analytical skills that are highly sought-after in industry and science.
One major research focus of BAM is modern Bioanalysis which has emerged as a cornerstone of the life sciences. In the same way that early advances in light microscopy was the key step-change for Biology and Medicine to progress, by analysing and understanding the basic bioprocesses at the cellular level, the new bioanalytical techniques are now pivotal for the next generation of biomedical research. At the Department of Chemistry, we use cutting-edge mass spectrometry, high-field NMR and other techniques for the elucidation of biological processes at the molecular level and from there to the system level.
BAM is a research team of experts who are passionate about analytical techniques and their application across the disciplines with collaborations beyond the Department, the University and the UK. Our research is supported by the Research Councils UK, the EU, charities and endowment trusts, and the pharmaceutical and analytical industries.
