Outreach team
The staff in the Department of Chemistry are acutely aware of the importance of working with young people in Schools and Colleges. Through the events and activities we organise every year we try to encourage young people to develop an interest in chemistry and an understanding of its importance to them and the whole of society.
We enjoy meeting teachers and pupils at our events to find out about the chemistry they are taught in School and the way they like to learn. This helps us to design our teaching and courses to best meet our students' needs.
All the staff at Reading are involved with Outreach events and the key people you will meet are listed here:
Dr Elizabeth Page (School Director of Outreach)
e.m.page@reading.ac.uk

Elizabeth was instrumental in setting up the original Teachers Centre at Reading, along with other colleagues. This has grown from a very small group of around twenty teachers to over a hundred. Elizabeth leads outreach activities across the School of Chemistry, Food Biosciences and Pharmacy.
Dr David Nutt (Department Director of Outreach)

David is a lecturer in physical chemistry in the department with a particular interest in chemical education. David is responsible for coordinating our successful Spectroscopy Masterclasses, Teachers' Centre activities and other chemistry outreach events.
Dr Joanne Elliott (Department Admissions Tutor)

0118 3786342
Joanne is the Department Admissions Tutor and is closely involved with all our outreach events. Joanne is a member of the RSC Analytical Division Council and responsible for Schools liaison on this committee. Joanne is organising the 2011 final of the RSC Schools Analyst Competition being hosted by the Department.
Dr John Baum (Senior Outreach Technician)
j.v.baum@reading.ac.uk
0118 3787746
John is an invaluable member of the Outreach team and is committed to widening access to Higher Education. John's technical expertise and advice underpins all our laboratory based Outreach activities. Fortunately John especially enjoys devising and developing demonstrations and hands-on activities for our Schools' events. John's contribution to teaching in Chemistry has been recognised with the Student-Nominated Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Life Sciences. John was chosen by students from all staff (academic, technical and clerical) contributing to teaching and its support across the Faculty - this amounts to a total of several hundred staff and we are particularly proud and fortunate that John is on our team.
Mrs Tina Cussen (School Outreach Secretary)

Tina is the School Outreach secretary and the first point of contact regarding visiting the Department. Tina's assistance is fundamental to the success of all our Outreach events.
