Chemistry and Art event

Wednesday 5th November 2014

An exciting event for year 9 students celebrating the intrinsic links between chemistry and art. Students will take part in a series of workshops showcasing the links, both obvious and subtle between chemistry and art as well as the chance to interact with exhibits put together by a team of fine art undergraduates.

Spectroscopy Workshops

Wednesdays 15th October 2014, 5th November 2014, 10th December 2014, 14th January 2015, 18th March 2015 and 29th April 2015, 1.00 - 3.00 pm, Department of Chemistry.

A fantastic opportunity for schools to visit the spectroscopy facilities at the University. After a short introductory talk, students will be shown round our Chemical Analysis Facility, which includes NMR, IR and Mass Spectrometers. This will be followed by a problem-solving session in which students are given a problem, some clues and the relevant IR, Mass Spec. and NMR data to identify a number of compounds in a reaction series.

There is a charge for this event: £50 for groups of 9-15 students. £30 for groups of 8 students or less. We can accommodate a maximum of 15 students per workshop.

Heroines of Science

Wednesday 4th March 2015, 12:30pm-4:15pm, Department of Chemistry.

Who is your heroine of science? the University of Reading invites you to join us for an exciting event celebrating the work of female scientists. This event is aimed at year 11 and 12 students and we encourage schools to enter teams of 4 students to present on who their unsung heroine of science is. Teams are judged via an academic panel with prizes for all competitors. The event is kicked off with an inspiring guest lecturer delving into an area of chemistry of current media interest. Priority is given to schools with presenting teams, non-presenting students/schools welcome.

Food Science Summer School

July 2015, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.

This is an introductory course aimed at giving students an insight into studying Food Science at university and future careers within the food industry.

The Summer School is aimed at Year 12 students who are studying science subjects.
