Formula for the Future

Teachers' Centre Annual Meeting

Spectroscopy Workshops

Wednesdays 12th October, 9th November, 7th December, 11th January, 8th February, 7th March and 2nd May, 1.00 - 3.00 pm, Department of Chemistry.

A fantastic opportunity for schools to visit the spectroscopy facilities at the University. After a short introductory talk, students will be shown round our recently-opened Chemical Analysis Facility, which includes NMR, IR and Mass Spectrometers. This will be followed by a problem-solving session in which students are given a problem, some clues and the relevant IR, Mass Spec. and NMR data to identify a number of compounds in a reaction series.

There is a charge for this event: £50 for groups of 9-15 students. £30 for groups of 8 students or less. We can accommodate a maximum of 15 students per workshop.

Salters' Festival of Science

Food Science Summer School

2nd-4th July, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.

This is an introductory course aimed at giving students an insight into studying Food Science at university and future careers within the food industry.

The Summer School is aimed at Year 12 students who are studying science subjects.

The annual Spectroscopy Masterclass will include short talks on Infrared and NMR spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry, a workshop session and instrument visits. After lunch there will be talks on applying for undergraduate chemistry courses and applications of chemistry in industry and the environment.

This year's Masterclasses were vastly oversubscribed and places for next year's event are offered to Teachers' Centre members on a "first-come, first-served" basis. The Masterclasses are intended for Year 12 students who have a particular interest in chemistry.

There is a charge of £20 for this event. If you would like us to pencil in places for your students now, please let us know as soon as possible. Please restrict groups to 15 students or less.

National Science and Engineering Week Activities *** Fully-Booked *** 

The Departments of Chemistry and Food and Nutritional Sciences are running two school science events to mark National Science and Engineering Week. One for Year 12, and one for Year 7-8.

"Chromatography for Food Applications"
Tuesday 15th March, 9.30-12.30, Food and Nutritional Sciences

This workshop for Year 12 students will consist of a practical session on the determination of caffeine content in Cola and a tour through our analytical facilities. There are 30 places available, and places are limited to 5 per school in the first instance. Depending on demand, we may be able to take additional pupils.

"Exploring Chemistry"
Wednesday 16th March, 1-3pm, Chemistry

This workshop for Year 7/8 students will involve a number of small experiments and demonstrations followed by an interactive talk entitled "Liquids, Crystals, Colours and Lights" given by Dr. Adam Squires. This event can be viewed as an enrichment and enhancement activity and will be most suited to pupils with a particular interest or aptitude for science. There are around 50 places, and we would envisage schools bringing up to 12-15 pupils.
