Outreach and working with schools
We know how fulfilling a career in chemistry can be and we want to use our passion for the subject to inspire the next generation of chemists and support those who teach them.
Our Department runs a number of outreach programmes that are designed to promote, inspire and enrich chemistry topics taught in schools.
We have an active Outreach Team, who provide a range of activities for all ages.
Here are some of the outreach activities we have planned:
AToM Day - Wednesday 13 September 2017
Teachers' Centre Annual Meeting - 20 September 2017
Open Day - 30 September and 7 October 2017
Spectroscopy Workshops - dates t.b.c.
Heroines of Science - Wednesday 7 March 2018
RSC Analyst Competition heat - April 2018, date t.b.c.
Salters' Festival of Chemistry - 9 May 2018 (new date)
Spectroscopy Masterclass - Wednesday 4 July 2018 (this date has changed)
Lectures for Schools
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Reading's Chemistry Department, we are presenting a series of lectures for students in years 11 through 13, which will enrich the topics covered in GCSE and A level chemistry.
Spectroscopy in a suitcase
The Royal Society of Chemistry Spectroscopy in a Suitcase scheme is a free outreach activity giving school students the chance to learn about spectroscopy through hands-on experience via a workshop run in their school. As well as covering the principles of spectroscopic techniques, students get to use a portable infrared spectrometer while completing activities with real-life contexts to demonstrate the applications of the technique. University staff/students deliver the workshops in school (typically 1.5-2 hrs) highlighting the chemistry career opportunities available. The workshop is designed for Year 12 or 13 students.
The equipment may also be available on a short-term loan basis. Teachers can apply to borrow it in schools for 2-3 day periods. Teachers need to arrange to pick up the kit and return it at pre-arranged times with the Department of Chemistry. Training is provided for teachers who have not used the equipment before, please request this when booking.
To book a workshop in your school or arrange for a loan of the kit please complete this online booking form.
Chemistry Teachers' Centre
Since 2000, our Chemistry Teachers' Centre has been supporting teachers to deliver chemistry in a way that will inspire the next generation of chemists. We have an annual programme of outreach activities suitable for KS3-5; from competitions promoting women in science to Spectroscopy Masterclasses.
The Chemistry Teachers' Centre meet once a year which is a great opportunity to network with other teachers and discuss current issues in chemistry teaching. This year Professor David Read from University of Southampton will be attending to update everyone about teachers' perceptions of the impact of the new A level. Our annual meeting will be on 20th September 2017.
