  • Principle Investigator - Chemistry for All

Building/Room: Chemistry/LG27

Joined the Department of Chemistry in January 2015 as Project Officer for 'Chemistry for All' a widening participation educational research sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Susan graduated from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology with a Chemistry Hons degree and was awarded the ESSO Chemical Prize for project work in her second year. Following graduation Susan was recruited by ICI, now Syngenta, and worked for fourteen years as a metabolism chemist and senior study director in the Environmental Sciences Department at Jealott's Hill Agrochemical Research Station, designing and running regulatory studies to isolate and identify breakdown products of novel agrochemicals in crops, soil and the environment. Studies were carried out using 14C-labelled compounds and involved a variety of extraction, isolation and identification techniques predominantly TLC, HPLC and MS. Susan had technical responsibility for the development of studies to investigate the photodegradation of agrochemicals and presented a poster at the Brighton Crop Protection Conference in 1988 and a paper at the XIX Congress of Entomology in Beijing China 1992. Other elements of her role included company representative for the UK Pesticide Metabolism Discussion Group, recruitment of industrial placement students and responsibility for departmental Public Affairs. Towards the end of her time at Jealott's Hill Susan was also a member of a Report Production Process workgroup and was involved in the early development of 'Tiger' a company compound database.

After a career break to spend time with her children Susan developed an interest in education volunteering in the science and maths departments at Sandhurst Secondary School. In 2013 Susan was awarded a Royal Society of Chemistry Teacher Training Scholarship and started a PGCE in Secondary Science with Chemistry at St Mary's University in Twickenham. Unfortunately having to suspend her studies Susan tutored GCSE Science and A Level Chemistry before taking up the Chemistry for All role in preference to resuming her teacher training at St Mary's.
