About us

Charlie Waller was a young man who suffered from depression and committed suicide at the age of 28. The Charlie Waller Institute (CWI) is a collaborative initiative between the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, Reading University and Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Clinicians need to know that the training they receive has a demonstrable, positive impact on both their skill and the outcomes for their patients. The Charlie Waller Institute is therefore committed to training therapists only in psychological therapies that have been shown to work, and also to ensuring that the training impacts positively on clinician skill and patient outcome.

We are also a South Central Strategic Health Authority selected training provider for the ground-breaking Department of Health's IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) programme, having secured a contract through to spring 2011.

Objectives

The aims of the Charlie Waller Institute are to:

• train clinicians in evidence-based psychological treatments in particular those recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE);
• evaluate the effectiveness of the training to ensure that it improves clinician knowledge, skills and patient outcome;
• undertake research to add to the evidence-base for effective psychological treatments.

Training

The Charlie Waller Institute provides high quality workshops in addition to both a Certificate and Diploma in evidence-based psychological treatment. The workshops and courses are delivered only by nationally and internationally recognised clinical academics who are leaders in their field. Certificate and Diploma courses have been running since January 2008. The year-long Diploma course is accredited by BABCP at Level 1, and will enable clinicians to receive specialist supervision and develop expertise at delivering evidence-based interventions (predominantly cognitive behaviour therapy).    

Bursaries

NHS Education South Central operates an Education Bursary Schemefor all staff (in any job role) employed by the NHS , and staff in Public Health roles who are employed by the Health and Social Care Sector, within South Central SHA boundaries such as Oxford, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
