November 2009
Image
of the Month for November shows a cross section through the leaf
of an Arabidopsis plant. It was taken by CfAM Microscopist Chris Stain,
using the Cryo-SEM facility for Dr Olga Koroleva from the School of
Biological Sciences.
The rounded shapes are individual cells. Towards the centre of the
picture can be seen a vascular bundle, these are the structures that can
sometimes be seen as the veins on a leaf’s surface; they contain the
tissues that are responsible for moving water and nutrients around the
plant. Arabidopsis is a common garden weed, and is widely used by
scientists to study aspects of plant physiology, genetics and
biochemistry. It is treated as a ‘model’ organism, and is used to provide
insights into the way that all plants function |
