What are CETLs?

Benefiting learning, investing in excellence

Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs) are the largest ever funding initiative by Government, through the Higher Education Funding Council for England.  Their mission is to promote excellence across all subjects and aspects of teaching and learning.   £315 million is being invested over a five year period, between 2005 and 2010.

Across the country 74 CETLs have been established, some benefiting specific subject areas, others looking at specific educational themes.  Each centre was awarded on the basis of an institutions' having a proven track record of excellence in their fields.

The University of Reading was awarded four Centres and is one of only two UK universities hosting or jointly running four CETLs.  Two of the Centres, CETL-AURS and the Centre for Career Management Skills (CCMS), are exclusive to Reading, whilst piCETL and LearnHigher are collaborative centres with other universities.
