Fifth Annual Conference on Competition Enforcement in the CEE Member States

This year the annual conference concentrating on competition policy in the Member States in the CEE region is going to be organised in Bratislava. The conference is co-organised by the Hungarian Competition Law Research Centre, University of Reading and sponsors this year: Havel, Holásek & Partners s.r.o (golden sponsor) and Allen and Overy. The Advisory Committee of the conference consists of Dr. Pal Szilagyi, and Professor Ioannis Kokkoris.

This conference is following from last time in Budapest, and the years before in Warsaw, Brno and Budapest. Countries that acceded to the European Union in the 21st century have long history with competition law. Most of these countries also represent smaller, open market economies, which have faced a rapid privatisation process. Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary have also endured several common historical events that make them face similar market situations and problems.

The conferences in previous years have involved leading practitioners, academics and public officials from several countries (see the programs: Budapest, Warsaw, Brno and Budapest). With this year's program we follow this tradition

The conference will be held on the 21st February 2014 in Bratislava.

Symposium - Who Wants Big Banks?

The CCFLR is co-organising a Banking Law Symposium on 'Who Wants Big Banks?'. A critical evaluation of regulatory, size, governance, resolution and competition issues.
Views are emerging that banks are simply too big and should be broken up so that taxpayers are not again put at risk. A former Chairman and CEO of Citibank said that "[it] wasn't that one or two institutions did stupid things. It was, we all did, and the whole system came down". As well, the former Chairman of Merrill Lynch noted that he was one of the people who led the charge to get rid of Glass-Steagall and he now regrets having done that. Banks have increased in size and complexity and become global institutions challenging the reach of national regulators. What have we learned from the great financial crisis? What steps are policymakers taking to avoid similar events in the future? Has the risk culture of banking changed so dramatically? What is the future of financial regulation?

The conference will take place in Ottawa, Canada on 26 and 27 June 2013
