- Biodiversity plays an important role in ecosystem function and in the provision of goods and services to man. For example, over 30% of global crop production depends on insect pollination, a service that is estimated to be worth in excess of US$100 billion per year.
- Despite the importance of ecosystem services, our current knowledge of the links between agricultural land-use, biodiversity, ecosystem function and service provision is relatively limited.
- Our work in this area is designed to better understand the nature of these links, how they respond to global change and their value to man.
- We work on a wide range of ecosystem services related to biodiversity including insect pollination and pest control, crop disease and predation, carbon storage and sequestration, provision of habitats for other species, tourism and recreation.
