Captive Animal Management

The module is a 5 day residential field course to the International Training Centre, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust based at Jersey Zoo. The module aims to provide an insight into the general running and maintenance of an exotic animal collection, to outline the biology and requirements of specific types of zoo animals and to provide an understanding of the role of zoos in conserving fragile ecosystems and endangered species. Lecture content includes designing enclosures, reintroductions, small population biology, managing species health, monitoring parasites and pathogens, diet planning, animal welfare and animal behaviour in captivity. Students will also have time to spend on individual study at the park.
