Lecturer in Art and Director of Teaching & Learning

BA Art, BA Art and History of Art, PhD Art, PhD History of Art. Module convenor for Studio 1 Art, International Study and Landscape & Memory.
Areas of Interest:

Ciara is a curator, writer and book artist. Her teaching is research-led and is informed by her engagement with rurality, heritage & community, place-based curating, animism and experiential education. She is the recipient of IMPACT Research Awards from University of Reading (2016 & 2017), a Large Grant Award from Arts Council Wales (2015) and she was one of the 2011 recipients of the Wales Arts International Critical Writing Award. Since this award, she has written catalogue essays and critical reviews for numerous art journals including Art Review.

Ciara's current research interests are concerned with rural magic, in particular apotropaic objects and other forms of sympathetic magic. This research has been conducted in collaboration with the Museum of English Rural Life and will inform a forthcoming international conference on AlterRurality, an exhibition of contemporary artworks and a cross disciplinary publication in 2019. Ciara's bookworks are housed in numerous collections including TATE Britain Artists' Book Collection and The V&A National Art Library among many others. In 2015 she produced a limited edition publication titled Thin Place as part of a major international exhibition she curated at Oriel Myrddin, funded by Arts Council Wales. Her forthcoming chapter in Climate and culture: multidisciplinary perspectives of knowing, being and doing in a climate change world will be published by Cambridge University Press in Spring 2018.
