Areas of Interest:

My research covers aspects of French and Spanish art in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with particular emphasis on Jacques-Louis David, Eugène Delacroix and Francisco Goya. I am also particularly interested in the relationship between the visual arts and the social and political upheavals of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods, including the imagery and ideology of territorial conquest and colonization.

Postgraduate Supervision:

I welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduate students in any of the above areas of interest, as well as 18th and 18th century sculpture. I have supervised postgraduate research theses on Goya and on English Baroque and Gothic Revival architecture as well as acting as external examiner for doctoral theses on French 18th and 19th century painting and criticism.
