Year Out: Professional Studies Advisor
Professional Experience and Development Records
Practical training and work experience are an integral part of the requirements for students planning to register as architects in the UK. The Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) requires a minimum of 24 months of supervised experience and training in practice before a student is eligible to sit the Part 3 Examination. This experience can be at any time after a student has commenced a recognised course in architecture.
Professional Studies Advisor (PSA) and Professional Experience Development Records (PEDR)
The PEDR is an electronic record of a student's professional experience, development and competency in the practice of architecture. The PEDR is a mandatory component for all students sitting the RIBA Part 3 examination. You will require an employment mentor and a PSA to sign each of your PEDRs.
Your Professional Studies Advisor will be responsible for monitoring your progress and signing your PEDR record sheets on a quarterly basis. Furthermore, we will be able to advise you on work and professional experience issues and support you throughout your Stage 1.
For more information and to sign up see: PEDR
Once registered with the PSA Service, you will automatically be added to the Stage 1 mailing list inviting you to all Open Events at the University of Reading, informing you of a variety of events from lecture series to End of Year Shows. This will help you develop your knowledge and networks, forming part of the architectural community.
There will be two call back days per year. This will give you the opportunity to meet with your PSA to discuss any issues they feel are arising in the placement, and also talk to your peers about your placement experience.
How to apply and fees
The Professional Studies Advisor service is available to Part 1 graduates from all universities. The registration form and fee are available online via our online store.
Once employment has been secured, the Stage 1 2019-2020 fee of £200 can be paid online via the link above.
