Life at Archaeology

Postgraduate sudent on a field tripSince 2002 the Archaeology Department has occupied its own purpose-built accommodation, which includes research and teaching laboratories, situated close to other departments within the Quaternary Scientific (QUEST) - scientific services, as well as the University Library. Students also benefit from the rich archaeological heritage of Reading and its area including the important medieval abbey at Reading, nearby Roman Silchester, the prehistoric monuments of the Thames Valley, and historic centres such as Oxford, Winchester and Salisbury.

Wainwright Award

The FT Wainwright Award is supported by a member of the University Council, Barbara Wainwright, in memory of her father F.T. Wainwright, a distinguished scholar of the early middle ages who combined archaeological, documentary and place-name studies. The Department continues to promote such interdisciplinary research, for which it has an international reputation.

This award provides funding for dissertation research and fieldwork participation. Our current and recent students have used these funds to develop innovative dissertation research and has allowed a recent MSc Geoarchaeology student to carry out fieldwork in Easter Island
