Studentship terms and conditions


1. This information applies to new master's students taking up a place of study in 2021-2022 who are eligible for consideration for the Highways England Masters Studentships in Archaeology (see Eligibility Criteria below).

2. The Highways England Masters Studentships in Archaeology 2021 pertain to the MA Archaeology.

3. Please note that there are other scholarships schemes, such as the University of Reading Master's Scholarships or external sponsors, for example the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships Scheme or Chevening Awards. This information relates only to the Highways England Masters Studentships in Archaeology.

4. Masters Studentships applications will be reviewed after the closing deadline of 1 May 2021. Funding will not be awarded in order of application and the selection process does not start until after the closing date.

5. The allocation of funds is competitive and not all applications received may be successful. We will only contact successful studentship applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for a Highways England Masters Studentship for the academic year 2021-2022 candidates must:

1. Not already be in receipt of a full tuition fee scholarship.

2. Not already be registered on a postgraduate programme.

3. Have applied for entry to the full-time MA Archaeology during the academic year 2021-2022, using the University's online postgraduate application form.

4. Have received a formal offer of admission (it is not necessary to have accepted the offer of admission at application stage).

Terms and conditions

1. Studentship applications will only be considered if candidates satisfy the Eligibility Criteria and the Terms and Conditions.

2. Studentship applications must be submitted using the form that eligible candidates will have access to via their Me@Reading Applicant portal. No alternative method of application will be valid or considered. The scholarship application form must be completed in full, including confirmation that the candidate understands and accepts the terms and conditions under which the scheme operates.

3. Studentship candidates will be assessed primarily on the basis of their academic accomplishments to date, although reference may also be made to achievements outside of the field of education, for example extracurricular activities, voluntary work, overcoming adversity. The scholarship application allows for candidates to submit these details. Please note there is a limit of 3000 characters in which to record this information. Supplementary documents cannot be submitted, although University staff reviewing scholarship applications will make reference to the information provided as part of the master's application process, including supporting information, such as degree transcripts.

4. All information provided in the funding application should be provided by the candidate themselves and be true and accurate.

5. The Highways England Master's Studentship in Archaeology cannot be held in conjunction with any other University of Reading scholarship because it provides full funding of both tuition fees and living expenses. The University reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship, if the student obtains funding from another source.

6. The Studentship competition will close at midnight on 1 May 2021 and under no circumstances can studentship applications be submitted after the final deadline.

7. Candidates selected for a studentship will be notified by email and it is therefore essential that the University has up-to-date contact information. Upon being notified of an award, a candidate will have 2 weeks within which to register their acceptance. If the candidate has not accepted their offer of admission for the master's course, they will also be required to do this. If the Studentship and the offer of admission are not accepted within 2 weeks it will be assumed the candidate does not wish to receive funding and the funding offer will be withdrawn and may be allocated to another candidate.

8. If a Studentship is offered to a conditional offer holder, then the award of the Studentship will also be conditional on the student meeting these requirements for entry.

9. The University will only contact successful studentship applicants and the University will endeavor to do so within 3 weeks of the funding application deadline.

10. All Studentships are applied in the form of a tuition fee reduction. There is no cash alternative to the tuition fee reduction. Studentships cannot be deferred to future years and are for entry in the 2020-2021 academic year only.

11. Highways England Masters Studentships in Archaeology are awarded for one year only.

12. The University's decision is final and we are unable to consider receive requests for reconsideration. The University reserves the right to withdraw the Studentship if students are subsequently found to be ineligible or if these terms and conditions are not adhered to.

13. Please note that placement arrangements may be subject to review as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
