Key Facts:

Martyn is a professional zooarchaeologist appointed as a research fellow on the Rural Settlement of Roman Britain project in July 2012, led by Professor Michael Fulford. Martyn completed his PhD in 2011 as part of an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Studentship between the University of Nottingham and Sussex Archaeological Society. He spent the first two years of his doctoral research at Fishbourne Roman Palace, West Sussex, re-analysing the extensive faunal remains archive collected from multiple excavations since 1960, and his thesis examined the character of human-animal-landscape relationships across the Iron Age/Romano-British transition. Since finishing his doctoral research, Martyn worked as a research assistant for English Heritage on the regional review of the zooarchaeology of Roman southern Britain, a thoroughly rewarding position which then led on to his current post with Reading University. Towards the end of his PhD, and to date, Martyn has also run a successful freelance business working on both animal and human archaeological remains, whilst continuing to indulge his research interests.
