FT Wainwright Award
The scheme is supported by a member of the University Council, Barbara Wainwright, in memory of her father F.T. Wainwright, a distinguished scholar of the early middle ages who combined archaeological, documentary and place-name studies. The Department continues to promote such interdisciplinary research, for which it has an international reputation.
This award provides funding for dissertation research and fieldwork participation. These funds have been used by students to develop innovative dissertation research and have recently supported the following projects:
- In 2008 Louise Jones (MSc Geoarchaeology) carried out research in Easter Island
- In 2007/8 Tom Williams and Helen Vowles were helped to carry out experimental research on flint artefacts (Report on Tom's project; Report on Helen's fieldwork)
- In 2006/7 Eleanor Fry (BA Archaeology & Italian) was able to participate in fieldwork on the rock art sites of Val Camonica in northern Italy (Report on Eleanor's fieldwork)
- In 2005/6 Paulina Drzewinska (BA Archaeology), a second year student,received funding to excavate in the North Caucasus ( Report on Paulina's trip)
