Student profiles

Staff at Reading welcome the opportunity of answering any specific questions you may have, either about the nature of the courses themselves, or whatever potential career areas you feel you might be interested in hearing more about. But in the meantime, we thought you might like to know what one of our current students and three of our recent graduates had to say about their experience of studying Agricultural Business Management at Reading:

George Hood

BSc Agricultural Business Management
Trainee Farm Management Consultant, Strutt & Parker

"I am only a few months into my job, and already my degree is feeding directly into what I do on a day to day basis and hopefully being put to good use! As a result of completing the degree it has proved invaluable to have a good understanding of the agricultural industry and in particular the intricacies of running an agricultural business. It is rewarding to be able to put taught theory into good practice, and as a result parts of the degree which may have been difficult to comprehend initially are able to be put into context."

Andrew Atkinson

BSc Agricultural Business Management
Assistant Farm Business Consultant, Strutt and Parker

"I feel that I would struggle to find a degree course that provided better preparation for my job as an Assistant Farm Business Consultant than ABM. With a couple of exceptions, every module seems to have had some content that is relevant to the job I am doing now. Some modules provided direct business skills, some concentrated on farming production, and some give a picture of the wider environment - economics, EU policy etc.

Farm visits were also very useful as it meant we were taken to many varied businesses and we could see for ourselves how different systems work. The write-ups and reports we did encouraged us to think carefully about each farm, and they were real farm businesses which made it much more interesting than simply working with numbers on a page. This aspect of the programme makes it a lot easier to quickly assess a farm business now."

Michael Welham

BSc Agricultural Business Management
Farm Manager, Strutt and Parker Farms

"Gaining a BSc in Agricultural Business Management from the University of Reading has been recognised as a mark of institutional excellence by my employers. On leaving University it enabled me to gain a position as an Assistant Farm Manager for a well renowned farming company. The knowledge gained whilst studying modules during the course, including Business Planning and Control, Business Management Case Studies, Cereal Management and Marketing and the Dissertation has been instrumental in my progress to Farm Management level within the company and has allowed me to fulfil my potential as a business manager. Studying ABM at Reading has broadened my horizons and given me theopportunity to accomplish my ambitions, which otherwise would not have been possible."

Oliver Saul

BSc Agricultural Business Management
Graduate Farm Consultant, Brown and Co.

"The course at Reading offered a wide variety of modules, most of which have been necessary in the line of work that I am currently doing as a graduate farm consultant. The numerous financial management modules are vital in farm businesses as a way of comparison and benchmarking. These give an insight into farm accounts which has given me a good grounding and starting block to build on. The cereal marketing and management module was also very beneficial as in these volatile times it is vital to try and cut costs and yet achieve a high price for the commodity; this module enabled us to do that as we controlled all inputs and grew the crop aiming for the best gross margin. The visits were also useful as you could compare farm businesses against each other as well as see how farmers' practices and opinions varied. This makes you think outside of your own personal views."
