Eleanor researches the ethnography of development, notably in rural locations of the Global South. Her methodological skill set is on qualitative and participatory social methods and integration of these methods within interdisciplinary research.

Her current research interests cluster around issues of social protection, poverty and inequality, e.g. on the productive impacts of cash transfers, making linkages also to climate change adaptation and smallholder agriculture, e.g. regarding index insurance and issues of equity. A further long-standing interest is on artisanal mining livelihoods, which has recently included research on fair trade gold mining.
