Teacher Training - Does the University accept Enhanced DBS clearance through the Update Service?

We can only accept DBS clearance through the Update Service if the check meets all of these criteria:

  • You have registered with the DBS Update Service and paid the relevant online subscription fee.
  • Your DBS certificate is an Enhanced DBS certificate. The 'Position applied for' is listed as 'Child Workforce' on your Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Your Enhanced DBS certificate states 'DBS Fee Charged' (Enhanced DBS certificates that state 'No DBS Fee Charged' cannot be used to obtain clearance for a teacher training or early years programme).
  • Your Enhanced DBS certificate states 'None Recorded' against the Children's Barred List information and 'Not Requested' against the Adults' Barred List information (Enhanced DBS certificates that state 'None Recorded' against both the Children's and Adults' Barred List information cannot be used to obtain clearance for a teacher training or early years programme).

These are compliance regulations set by the UK government, and we cannot accept any DBS checks that do not meet the criteria.  If you already have an Enhanced DBS certificate but it does not meet one or more of these criteria, you will need to apply for a new Enhanced DBS check through the University.

Please note that you will need to ensure that your registration and subscription with the update service remains valid for the duration of your training, as your placement schools may also ask for permission to check your clearance through the update service.

Further information about the update service is available on the GOV.UK website

I already have an Enhanced DBS check, which meets all of these criteria, and I would like the University to check my existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the Update Service. What do I need to do?

Please bring these documents with you when you come to the university for your interview or, if recruited by one of our lead partner schools, to your Induction and Needs Assessment session

  • The original, as well as a photocopy, of the Enhanced DBS certificate that you would like us to check through the Update Service (we will need to have the full document so please ensure the photocopy is complete).
  • The originals, as well as photocopies, of at least three valid ID documents confirming your identity (please refer to our advice on providing the correct identity documents for the DBS check for a list of acceptable documents).
  • The originals, as well as photocopies, of documentation confirming name changes, where applicable.

You will also need to provide your permission for the University to check your Enhanced DBS certificate through the Update Service. You can do this by completing the online DBS information form

Important notes:

Checks on whether we can accept your existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the Update Service are carried out no earlier than 6 months before the start of the course. Once we have carried out the check, we will let you know whether we can accept your existing Enhanced DBS certificate through the Update Service. If we are unable to access or accept your Enhanced DBS certificate through the Update Service, you will need to apply for a new Enhanced DBS check through the University.

You will need to ensure that your registration and subscription with the update service remains valid for the duration of your training, as your placement schools may also ask for permission to check your clearance through the update service after you have started your training.
