  • Description
Marking awl or 'striking knife', used for marking lines with the grain and for picking out screw holes. From Mr Field, a wheelwright in Winson.
This marking awl, also known as a 'striking knife', consists of a steel rod which tapers to a sharp point at one end and has been drawn down at the other to form a chisel-like blade. The point is used for marking lines with the grain and for picking out screw holes, while the blade is used for cutting lines across the grain. This awl belonged to Mr W. W. Field, a wheelwright in Winson, Gloucestershire. Mr Field retired circa 1960 and the business closed.
