  • Description
Polehead; bedpost type with small bulges and a large cup shaped bulge. From the Ashby Saint Ledgers Club in Northamptonshire.
This brass polehead is of the bedpost type with several small bulges and a large cup shaped bulge, and it is topped with a design suggestive of an acorn. It possibly belonged to the Ashby Saint Ledgers Club in Northamptonshire. Poleheads were carried on processions by members of village clubs or parish friendly societies on their annual ‘walks’. The friendly societies were formed to provide some insurance for members against sickness or death, and also played an important role in the social life of the village.
