Herring Snr. // Black & gold frame. // Dimensions: 75 x 51 cm including frame. // Associated information: This print was acquired in Cornwall by the donor’s mother who lived in Marlow.’, MERL Miscellaneous note – 'JOHN FREDERICK HERRING (1795–1865). It is said that Herring was prompted to become an animal painter by seeing the St Leger run at Doncaster in 1814. He worked first as a coach painter and then became a coach driver. He had no training as an artist except for a short period with Abraham Cooper. He painted a great number of horse portraits and was also well known for his farmyard scenes and hunting pictures. His three sons were also painters.'
