  • Description
    This is the 'Kaycee Avijector Set' which was a veterinary kit used for injecting poultry to protect against fowl pests. It consists of an injection gun, a flexible plastic tube with a needle at one end, a cord with hooks at the end, a box of injection needles containing eight (with an additional four missing), four additional spare needles and two packets containing a spare plastic tube and needle. The set was manufactured by Kenneth Castiglione Ltd. of London and distributed by Glaxo Laboratories of Middlesex. The two packets of spares were made by Pfizer Ltd., of Sandwich, Kent. The kit is part of the Lucas Collection of objects and documents donated to the Museum by Mr Lucas, a farmer and dairyman from Reading, Berkshire.

    Injection kit. Named the Kaycee Avijector Set, this injection kit was used to protect poultry against pests and disease. It consists of an injection gun as well as tubes, cords and needles. It was manufactured by Kenneth Castiglione Ltd, with some elements made by Pfizer. Vaccination has played a key role in the advancement of poultry farming. For example, Louis Pasteur developed a vaccine against chicken cholera in 1879. Marek's disease, which had previously been the largest natural threat to chicken flocks, was first vaccinated against in 1970.

B. Lucas, a farmer and dairyman. Mr Lucas kept chickens, cows and pigs on his smallholding in Whitley Wood Road, Reading, and retired in 1971. The Lucas family farmed in a small way at Lane End Farm in Shinfield, Reading, from the end of the nineteenth century. Mr Lucas’ grandfather built Lane End House, and brought threshing machines to Berkshire, and his uncle was a threshing tackle contractor with premises opposite the farm. The objects in the Collection were used by Mr Lucas on his smallholding and in conjunction with his dairy business. The documents (now in the MERL Archives) consist of show catalogues for poultry and fancier's associations, prize certificates for eggs and poultry, record cards for egg production and newspaper cuttings about shows.
