A timber dog, used by woodworkers for moving logs that are too large to be moved by hand. This type of timber dog is also known as a 'ring dog' or 'timber hook'. It consists of a heavy hook (without teeth) which is joined directly to a ring. A long piece of wood which acts as a lever would be placed through the ring while the hook is passed over a log. By levering the handle forwards the whole log could be moved. It is part of the Saint Mary Bourne Collection, from the village of Saint Mary Bourne in Hampshire.
