    Basket perhaps used for keys or as a ‘tidy’. Made in Germany in the 19th C.. Made of fine white willow skein, with a foot and a handle.
    This basket was perhaps used for keys or as a ‘tidy’. It was made in Germany in the nineteenth century. It is an oblong basket, made of fine white willow skein, with a foot and a handle. The bottom is turned-skeinwork and the sides are French-randed.

    The Ann Mary Pilcher Collection of Victorian Baskets (67/60-94) was collected by Ann Mary Pilcher in 1957-1967, mostly from junk shops and stalls. Little history is known about any of them., MERL 'Catalogue of baskets' form – 'NAME: BASKET // Acc. No.: 67/76 // Group: PERSONAL. USE – TOYS // Neg. no.: 60/8649 // Place of origin: GERMANY // Period in use: mid or late 19th c. // DESCRIPTION // Materials: White willow. Very fine skeinwork. Type known as Jugenstiel [Jugendstil]. // Shape and construction: Oblong. Rods only used for bows, bottom sticks & rim. Bottom turned skeinwork, sides sewn to it. Foot.
