This is a wooden-axeled Sussex cart dating from the early- to mid-nineteenth century.

Farm carts had many uses but harvest brought so much to carry that wagons were preferable. Ongoing enclosure of common land during the 1800s meant field and farm sizes became larger. Larger loads meant wagons were increasingly worth the expense.
