A lapstone, used by a shoemaker to beat leather on. It would be held in the lap. According to the donor there was a St. Crispin's Day (25 October) tradition in the south of England, especially Hampshire, on which cobblers came to their work in the morning and beat out a rhythm on the lapstones.

MERL Miscellaneous note – ‘Use as base when leather is beaten to compress and increase its surface area. // On St. Crispins day cobblers came to their work in the morning and beat out a rhythm on the lapstones – practice of S. England espec. Hampshire. // Lapstones are usually smooth stone with a concave surface and edges rounded by river action.’
