George Coates, a farmer of Carlton near Pontefract, co. York, collected facts for a herd book during the Eighteen-twenties. From these notes, Jonas Whitaker of Greenholm, near Otley, co. York, composed the book described below. Whitaker subsequently (some time before 1865 December 8) gave the book to J.A. Rhodes of Carlton, who in turn gave it to his nephew Francis Darwin (1825-1920). On 1869 January 28, Francis Darwin transferred it to William Fison of Greenholm (1820-1900) who had married Fanny (1814-1892) daughter of Jonas Whitaker. The book later came into the possession of William Fison's son, Sir Frederick Fison bart, of Boarsell, co. Sussex, from whom it descended to the present baronet, Sir William Fison (1966 June)
