    The donor's family were originally dye manufacturers in the north of England. In the late 19th century they took possession of Huntingfield Hall Farm in Suffolk. The donor himself became a farmer in 1927, renting first Tithes Farm and later Metfield Hall. When in 1934 he began dairy farming, he was the first in the Metfield area to do so. He began to buy land only after 1954. Farm size, etc. Metfield Hall Farm: 408 acres; leased from Col. Taylor; Tithes Farm: 216 acres; leased from Major Digby Mills
