The Friends of the Lake District was established in 1934. The Friends of the Lake District was launched at a public rally in Fitz Park, Keswick. The organisation was set up to campaign to create a national park to protect the Lake District landscape for future generations. All through the 1930s the Friends campaigned against large scale land acquisitions and planting of acres of commercial spruce in Cumbria by the Forestry Commission. During the 1930s and 40s Friends of the Lake District campaigned to create a national park in Cumbria and which was realised in 1951. Friends of the Lake District also campaigned for the establishing of The Yorkshire Dales National Park which was created in 1954. In the 1980s Friends of the Lake District have campaigned against raising the water level at Wastwater and Ennerdale. The 2000s have seen the Friends of the Lake District campaign for the extension of both the Lake District and The Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The Friends have also campaigned against increased traffic in the Lake District, the use of power boats on the Lakes, light pollution, electricity pylons and other issues. The organisation also represents the CPRE in Cumbria.
