    The donor's family, originally from co. Bedford, settled in West Tilbury, co. Essex some time before 1850 and by 1870 were established farmers and dealers. C.H. Cole ran a large livestock market (especially for Kent sheep) at Tilbury Fort. During the depression, the family expanded their interests to include market gardening on terraced slopes. The Coles controlled wide areas of marshland grazing and survived the depression although many other families long established in the area did not. In the 1890s they began to accept contracts for steam cultivation and threshing Farm size etc. Size unknown; river alluvial loams on terraced slopes; owner-occupiers and tenants
