J.H. Ismay (1867-1930), having left the family shipping business of Ismay, Imre and co., purchased Iwerne Manor in 1908 from Lord Wolverton. He spent considerable sums of money on buildings, cottages and equipment and earned a reputation as a breeder of dairy shorthorn cattle, pigs and chickens. His accounting system was detailed and analytical, based to a large extent on the individual field. There is a strong possibility that Ismay's farming was experimental. Using empirical methods, he established new systems which drastically modified traditional regional practice. For additional information see DOR 2/2/1 below Farm size etc. About 400 acres; chalk loam and down; owner-occupied
