The farms were occupied by Joseph Hobbs, by his son George Hobbs and by the donor.Joseph Hobbs began as a butcher/dealer in Newbury, co. Berks at the age of eighteen. He thrived and by 1890 owned several farms and other estates, and commanded considerable capital. At one stage over 1,600 acres were in his possession. He died in 1912. Most of the farmland has now (1966 September) been sold, with the exception of Snelsmore Farm
