The family of the donor originally owned a milling business at Greenham, co. Berks. The donor's grandfather took over Halfway Farm in 1883. His father assumed the holding in 1920 and the donor himself became a partner in 1941. During the period between the wars, the estate eased the effect of the depression by levying low rents and undertaking repairs. A dairy section was introduced in the early 1920's. The farm buildings are (1966 July) generally good, mainly because they were largely rebuilt after a barn fire in about 1890 Farm size etc. 1920-1936 : 330 acres; mixed soils (gravel, chalk and yellow clay); 1936 onwards; 396 acres tenants to Suttons Estate; before 1900 tenants to the Houblon family
