Lord Carrington to open new student services building

The University of Reading's new state-of-the-art Student Services Centre – The Carrington Building – will be officially opened on 21 September.
The building, which will draw together services for students, has been named in honour of Lord Carrington, the Chancellor of the University since March 1992.
He will officially open the building in a VIP reception for staff, representatives of the student body, and friends of the University from the local community and beyond.
Professor Gordon Marshall, Vice Chancellor, said: "Lord Carrington has made a very significant contribution to the University since he became Chancellor. This landmark building on campus is a truly fitting tribute to him, and will benefit thousands of students for many years to come.
"Lord Carrington has been an exceptional Chancellor who has contributed enormously to the University over many years. He has made innumerable friends and inspired everyone with his tireless work and unlimited enthusiasm for University activities."
This is one of the final official engagements for Lord Carrington KG GCMG CH MC PC DL as Chancellor. John Madejski, the chairman of Reading Football Club, will be installed formally as the next Chancellor at a ceremony in December.
Located between the Palmer Building and the Students' Union on the Whiteknights campus, the Centre will include a new Helpdesk facility for all general student enquiries, as well as the Disability Office, Accommodation, Student Financial Support, Student Records, the Careers Advisory Service and Centre for Career Management Skills, the Study Advisors and some elements of the Counselling Service.
The building will be officially opened and named at 12.15pm on 21 September. Speeches will be made by Lord Carrington, Professor Marshall and Sally Pearman, President of the Reading University Students' Union.
