University's bid to strengthen links with community
Release Date : 02 July 2007
The University of Reading has strengthened its commitment to being a good neighbour by creating a new role of community relations manager to build bridges between the local community and the University.
Ann Westgarth, who has a background in community relations and development work, will work to strengthen the University's relationship with local partners such as Reading Borough Council, Thames Valley Police, local residents, landlords and the Students' Union.
Her role is also to look impartially at the impact the University has on the local community and how it can improve relations with local residents and businesses.
Ann said: "The University has a huge impact on the local area in providing economic, social and cultural benefits. Whilst most students are an asset to the community there are those that cause problems and this can be very distressing for local residents.
"I will take prompt action to deal with individual complaints. At the same time, I'll be looking to work in partnership with residents and other agencies on longer term solutions to some of the more complex issues that we identify. There is a great deal of determination both by the University and others to tackle these issues, and the job, although challenging is one that the community support and that I feel confident in meeting."
Key to her appointment is the University's continuing and increasing focus on how it is perceived by its local neighbours in the community, and its wish to be a better neighbour and deal with complaints and concerns as effectively as possible.
In consultation with partners and other key stakeholders, Ann will develop a strategy which aims to reinforce the University's role as a good neighbour and an asset to the community, while also making it more accessible to local people and providing a direct point of contact for community issues.
Ann will be attending local Neighbourhood Action Groups and various other community meetings to make sure the University plays an active part in community issues, and also to make sure the University is fully aware of any concerns it may need to address.
As the main point of contact for complaints from local residents regarding student behaviour, Ann is currently developing a code of practice in relation to their behaviour in the community.
Ann, who is also mum to three teenagers, has lived and worked in Reading for sixteen years. She can be reached on 0118 3784479 or via email. She can usually be contacted directly between 10am-6pm Monday to Friday.
