Prof. Sir Brian Hoskins appointed to the new Committee on Climate Change

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have announced that University of Reading Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, will be one of the experts to sit on the new Climate Change Committee, established as part of the Government's Climate Change Bill.

Sir Brian is widely acknowledged as a world-leading authority on climate change and global weather patterns. He is a leading member of the Walker Institute for Climate System Research at the University of Reading and also Director of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College.

The Committee is an independent body which will assess how the UK can best achieve its greenhouse gas emission goals for 2020 and 2050. The Committee will also be looking at the UK's target for 2050 to reduce its

CO2 emissions by 60%, to see if this is stringent enough. At the end of January, Defra announced that business leader, Lord Adair Turner, will be the Committee's chair.

Sir Brian Hoskins is one of five world-class experts on the Committee selected from the fields of climate science and policy, economics, business and financial management.
