Uni Boat Club heads inside for another success
Release Date : 21 November 2007
Fresh from their recent success at the London Fours Head competition, the University of Reading Rowing Club (RUBC) again had the opposition covered, by taking the top university prizes at the recent 2007 British Indoor Rowing Championships.
Held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, the competition attracts the very best rowers from around the country and RUBC returned with an impressive two gold medals and a bronze.
John Preston confirmed he has a bright future by claiming the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) lightweight title. This was an outstanding effort by a rower who is in his first year at Reading and at only 18, was one of the youngest competitors in the BUSA competition.
In the BUSA heavyweight division Sam Townsend was the rowaway winner, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of his nearest rival. This must have impressed British rowing coach Jurgen Grobler, who has already identified Sam as having great potential. Bill Lucas also did himself proud by taking the bronze medal.
"It is very encouraging for the club to come away from such a prestigious event with these tremendous results," said RUBC Director of Rowing Will Rand. "The competition was incredibly strong and packed with this year's Oxford University Boat Race crews. Sam, John and Bill are athletes that the University is very proud to have and a real inspiration to their RUBC teammates".
