The University of Reading is commencing the enabling works prior to the construction of two halls of residence in Spring 2009.

Based on the framework of the Whiteknights Campus Development Plan 2008 -2018, the University is planning to build a new hall on the site of the former Whiteknights Hall. The new hall will be named Mackinder after a former Principal of the University. To the south of Childs Hall the University will build Stenton Hall named after a former Vice-Chancellor. Childs Hall will be demolished at a later date once its replacement is operational. A planning application for flexible hub buildings for the two halls, to include student catering outlets, a laundrette, social spaces and offices will also be submitted.

A cornerstone of the University's plans for the campus over the next ten years will involve improving internal connections and allowing the University to centralise its food services in one place on the campus. Construction will also begin on a new a central catering unit near the Whiteknights' Pepper Lane entrance in Spring 2009.

The Whiteknights Campus Development Plan 2008-2018 was the subject of a major consultation in autumn 2007. A separate exhibition on the University's plans to redevelop a number of its halls of residence took place in July 2008.

Colin Robbins, Director of Estates and Facilities Management, University of Reading, said: "The feedback from staff, students and the local community, with regard to our plans for the two new halls and their associated hub facilities has been very positive and useful. We have reflected it as far as possible in our final planning submissions to both local authorities. We are now in a position to move forward on our exciting plans to provide top-quality accommodation for the students of the future."
