Students will gain an overall understanding of Gothic art and architecture in Northern Europe.  In particular they will learn how art and architecture could be used by patrons and institutions as a means of promoting the interest of those individuals and groups.  They will also learn about the relationship between artists and patrons and will gain a basic knowledge of some of the techniques used by artists and architects of the period.

Content

This unit will begin by examining early Gothic in France but for the most part it will concentrate on English art and architecture.  We will be considering a number of themes, amongst which will be:  the cult of saints and their relics, in particular the use of art as propaganda to promote the shrine of Thomas Becket; the cathedral as an image of heaven; the training and status of the artist and architect; the use of images as 'the bible of the illiterate' and/or 'objects of idolatry' and the systematic destruction of these images at the end of the middle ages.
