The Victorian age experienced rapid change as industrialization, urbanization and supposed progress transformed Britain. During this course students will gain an overall understanding of the stylistic changes which occurred within Victorian architecture, and appreciate the main causes which underlay these changes. They will also learn about the linkage between religion and architecture. Finally, consideration will be given to the linkage between patronage and architecture, seeing how many wealthy men spent part of their money on notable buildings.

Content

The course will comprise ten themes, each aimed at exploring and developing an aspect of Victorian architecture. The themes will be:
The Historical Context 1837-1901; The Picturesque tradition; A.W.N. Pugin and his Principles; The Search for a Style; Victorian Churches; John Ruskin and Italy; The Rogue Architects; Further Searching for a Style; The Battle of the Styles; Arts & Crafts Architecture.
