On completion of the unit students should be able to recognise the work of the principal artists and architects working in 16th century Venice and the surrounding area.  In addition they should be able to justify their identification.  They should have gained an understanding of the principal trends in patronage (both corporate, including the 'scuole', and private), iconography and theory which characterize this period in Venice, as well as the social and historical context in which works of art were created there.

Content

This unit will exmaine the development of art and architecture in Venice and its mainland empire from roughly 1500 to 1580.  Topics covered will include the topography of Venice and its characteristic building types, different forms of patronage, private and institutional, artistic theory and the development of the illustrated architectural treatise, and the relationship between the art of Venice and its satellite cities.  Artists to be studied will include Giorgione, Titian, Lotto, Tintoretto, Veronese and El Greco.  Among the architects studied will be Palladio, Sanmicheli, Sansovino and Falconetto.
