Language Requirements

Non-native English speaking students

Students talking outside the Faculty of Arts and HumanitiesStudents must understand, speak, read and write English well in order to achieve good results in their studies. If you have any doubt about your English you should discuss the matter with your adviser in your home university and if necessary arrange to take an English test.

The International English Language testing System (IELTS) is administered by the British Council, from which information can be obtained.

Their address is 10 Spring Gardens, London SW1A 2BN. The University normally requires a score of 7.0 or above.

The University will also accept TOEFL scores of over 250 (computer based) or 600 (paper based).

The School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLAS) at Reading can help students who wish to improve their command of English. It provides a language laboratory where you may work on your own and various kinds of support, some of which you would be required to pay for. However, SLAS does not offer instruction in English as a foreign Language as part of the normal University curriculum during the academic year.
