ECTS

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is measures the workload required to achieve the objectives of an academic programme
Foyer of the Palmer building

All Modules are given a weighting in terms of ECTS credits.

3 term study period = 60 ECTS
2 term study period = 40 ECTS
1 term study period = 20 ECTS

An academic year (late September to early July) consists of 60 ECTS credits:

NB. For JYA Students 5 ECTS = 3 JYA Credit Hours

Students must ensure that they achieve the correct amount of ECTS credits for the period of time that they are studying at the University - 60 ECTS over 3 terms, 40 ECTS over two terms and 20 ECTS over one term. Please note that where only part of a module (one or two terms) is followed, credits will be awarded on the basis of the proportion of the workload of the module represented by the part(s) followed.

IMPORTANT

  • It is not permissible to register for modules totalling more than 60 ECTS.
  • Failure to accumulate the correct number of ECTS credits could have serious repercussions on your home degree programme and Erasmus Grant (if appropriate). Therefore should your university allow you to take less than this, it must be clearly stated on your learning agreement how this shortfall will be made up by your home institution.
  • If you are allowed to study less credit than the prescribed amounts, you must get your Study Abroad Institutional Coordinator in your Home University to email confirmation of this to the Reading International Office.
  • It is also the responsibility of the student to confirm with their home University (preferably before arrival) that Reading credits will transfer back to their home institution.
