A career in the financial markets and especially investment banking and securities is the first choice of many bright, well-qualified graduates. It is not hard to see why; starting salaries exceed £ 40,000 pa.

Course Overview

At Reading you will gain not only the knowledge and skills to get a head start securing a role in the financial markets but will also be well equipped to gain entry into a range of other professions. When you study this course there is also the exciting prospect of working on transactions you read about in the press, or watching while the markets move in response to breaking news.  For example, each year you could be part of a team of students we enter into the Rotman International Trading Competition in Toronto. Our dealing rooms give will also give you hands-on experience which enables you to demonstrate to employers a practical understanding of financial markets. An aptitude for mathematics is an asset as is undertaking working internships between the second and third years.

ICMA Centre

Part of the triple-accredited Henley Business School, the ICMA Centre is the product of the first active collaboration between the securities industry and a university finance department. Benefits of the Centre includeuniquely designed undergraduate degrees in Finance, integrating finance theory with real investment banking practice and access to expert advice and teachin from world-renowned academics, as well as distinguished industry practitioners, deliver superb, distinctive teaching to ensure that you have all the skills to thrive in this fast-paced industry.

The practical application of finance theory is one of the ICMA Centre's key advantages and is why students and financial institutions alike choose the Centre for their education and training needs. This integration of theory with practice is achieved through the use of the Centre's three state-of-the-art dealing rooms. All equipped by Thomson Reuters, the terminals run the latest industry simulation software such as StockTrak as well as the Centre's own simulation software platform

Career prospects

We recognise the importance of career development and have integrated specialist career management into the programme, thereby providing our students with a tool kit to help them achieve their career aspirations. Our graduates enter the market with knowledge and skills to enable them to gain excellent careers in areas such as sales and trading, asset management, operations and risk management. Our statistics show that typically more than 90% of graduates are in employment or further study within 6 months of graduating.

Funding Opportunities

There are a range of funding opportunities available for home, EU and international students.

The ICMA Centre in collaboration with the Foreign Trade University, Faculty of Banking and Finance, Hanoi, Vietnam have agreed a 10% discount to the tuition fees for the best performing students entering the 2+2 programme.

This scholarship is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students studying BSc Banking and Finance (taught in English) at the Foreign trade University wishing to progress their studies in a top UK university.
