Profile: Molefe Coper Joseph

What attracted you to the University of Reading?

It is my sincere pleasure to state that the University of Reading was amongst the five highly reputable UK Universities which offered me a place to pursue my PhD. Frankly speaking, it was not easy for me to make a choice right away. However, I ended up opting to come to the University of Reading mainly because I was interested in the name of the School in which my programme of study is housed as well as the nature of the programme itself. I thought it would be strategic (for employment) to study for a research degree in the field of poverty reduction under a School which brings together Agriculture, Policy and Development.

What do you enjoy most about living in Reading itself?

Reading is a very interesting town to live in. It is not only very close to London, but it has its own unique features like very low crime and natural beauty. The University of Reading is indeed a home away from home because of the natural beauty of tall trees, streams and birds which are part of daily life.

Have you experienced any difficulties?

I have not encountered any major problems since I came to Reading. At first I was worried about being homesick, only to learn that Botswana's national radio station and some South African stations are connected to the world via the internet. These radio stations keep me abreast with issues happening back home on a daily basis. Apart from this, I have friends from other countries for my daily social life and feel of cultural diversity.

Have you got any advice for future students?

I was fortunate in life to receive a prestigious fully funded Commonwealth Scholarship. There is no need to worry about food in the UK. It is not only cheap but traditional dishes from Botswana are available in shops around the University. I will encourage Botswana students willing to study at the University of Reading to go for it as they will enjoy themselves!

What are you planning to do when you finish your course?

I am confident to say doing a PhD is an important episode in my life course which attests to my personal determination and perseverance to climb the academic ladder. Upon completing my BSc degree in 2001 at the University of Botswana, I was awarded a scholarship by the Government of Denmark to study for an MPhil degree. Upon completing my MPhil in May 2003, I was recruited by the University of Botswana as a Temporary Teaching Assistant in the Department of Architecture and Planning until April 2005. Although I was unemployed for a year, I never gave up until I secured a PhD Scholarship from the Commonwealth which brought me to the University of Reading in September 2006. I am working towards complete my PhD in 2009 but I do not have strict plans of what to do after my graduation. However, I will be going back to Botswana to use my skills and knowledge to contribute positively to the development of my home country.
